New Fremont High School

In the spring of 2010, Dean's Landscaping & Excavating was selected as the site work contractor for the new Fremont High School in Fremont, MI. The new site presented many challenges including extensive wetlands and an all clay soil composition. During the summer of 2010, Dean's crew completed almost 90% of the site work including: Balancing of approximately 100,000 cubic yards of dirt, installation of 3,500 feet of sanitary force main, 5,500 feet of water main, 9,000 feet of storm sewer, installation of 30,000 yards of sand sub-base and 17,000 cubic yards of aggregate base.

Though Dean's Landscaping & Excavating is not based in Newaygo County, many of our employees are. Through payroll to our employees, use of local subcontractors and materials from local suppliers, Dean's was able to put $466,ooo.oo back into the Newaygo County economy.

All of us at Dean's Landscaping & Excavating would like to congratulate the community of Fremont on their new complex. We are thankful for the opportunity to work on this project and look forward to its completion.

Dean’s Landscaping & Excavating, Inc. had it's Annual Spring Meeting on April 23, 2010. These annual meetings are held with the entire company including the office staff, the mechanics and our guys in the field. We often have guest speakers. We cover various topics from the everyday paperwork to many important safety issues.

This year Dave Hoogenboom and JDE Company put on our lunch. Dave shared some great insight into dealing with these Tough Times. Rob with Michigan Laser went over some items with our Topcon GPS system. The employees were very exited to have one of John Deere’s newest machines to try out, thanks to JDE Company, the 764 High Speed Dozer that works with Topcon’s GPS. Rob went over how the two work together.

We also covered MIOSHA safety rules with Kevin Roehling with Berends, Hendricks, Stuit Insurance Agency.

Outrageous! Lawsuit Lunacy

There's big money in blaming others for your own bad luck. Too bad it costs all of us.

But in our upside-down legal system, the word fault can mean strange things. For instance, in May 2003, a trucker was driving on a public road near Cedar Springs, Michigan, when a small Cessna clipped the top of his landscaping vehicle and crashed into a field. Miraculously, no one was hurt, and it all seemed like a freak accident. So imagine how the owner of Dean's Landscaping felt when he found out that the plane owners wanted him to pay $21,000 for damages to the Cessna. The plane owners contended that, under the state's no-fault insurance law, they weren't technically operating a "vehicle," and because the plane was in the air, the incident didn't occur on a road -- which meant they were entitled to compensation. It's a kooky argument, but two judges agreed, and the landscaper's insurance company coughed up the damages.

With greedy lawyers poised to take advantage of every goofy mishap, dreams of big bucks have replaced common sense. To rein in this lawsuit abuse, some members of Congress have proposed putting caps on lawyers' fees and damage awards, and switching class-action suits from state to federal courts. But until that happens, my advice is that you retain a good lawyer -- and try not to drive into any airplanes.
